Genre study Blog tools

Music video Genres:

  • Performance
  • Special effects
  • Story
  • Dance
  • Animation
  • Browser

1.) Performance:
Pretty much just the Band/ performer with clips of them performing the song to something like an audience could even be done.

2.) Story:
Where a narrative plays out to the music which is behind the video. If done well can add a visual boost to the music.

3.) Special effects:
Use of After effects and Cinema 4D. This genre's effect is to draw the audience into the music.

4.) Dance:
Artist and others dance to the music in different and various locations

5.) Animation:
Adds a different feel to the video drawing viewers into almost another reality. This can also allow bands and artists to show sudo realistic representation of the lyrics.

6.) Browser:
Allows music videos to become interactive with new browser functions.

The 3 Music video genres I am choosing are:

  • Performance
  • Story
  • Dance

1.) Performance:

This music video is in the form of a performance, although it does not look like they are performing at a concert it shows them performing to the viewers that are through the screen.
In this video there is a lot of jump cuts and fast editing, this goes along with the beat of the song, often changing shot on the different beat hits making the shots and switches more effective in a way. We also see a lot of the transitions are shown with twists and shakes of the camera making a cool portal/ jumping effect to the video. We also see things like Fire cannons shooting out fire behind rappers giving it a real intense cool feel to it.

Another one like this is...

This one is a little bit more like that of a performance, as they have a mic in front of them and look as though they are performing to someone whereas they are actually just in a recording studio performing into the mic. Also, there are not really many switches or transitions in this video almost making it a little bit boring.

2.)Story:

This video shows the story of someone who gets kidnapped in a way and extremely injured all because of a gang induction, in this case, the song is based around the event as well so it talks about what was happening but the video gives the visual and helps out with what is happening instead of some other random video related somehow. While this is a story feel it is a bit slower with the transitions, a lot of 1st person shots, and way more location changes to it. This, even more, reinforces that this is a story in itself.

Other music videos for this genre were...

This video shows the story of a boy in a new school trying to fit in and having problems and eventually winning people's acceptance but one guy still doesn't like him, eventually making them race each other when the main guy wins the race and wins everyone's respect. Even though the transitions in this are slower than others, these are actually quite fast for a story genre of the music video.

Dance:

In this music video, We see a lot of spinning of the camera, a lot of quick transitions and cuts, and a lot of location changes in the scene. As well as these we see that pretty much all of the dancing and choreography in this video is very on point, and together. We also even see that there are cars drifting in circles almost like they are dancing as well, this gives a really cool effect to the video and probably making a lot of the viewers quite impressed.

In this music video, it is more of an unknown, in the sense that the transitions are very fast often cutting within a few seconds and switching back, another thing that was done differently from the other dance video was that the artist is switching between just him rapping and also the dancers with him dancing, the dancing is also done in a lot of different locations but more areas where people are, like shoe stores, etc..., also the transitions in this video are very shaky and quick almost like the cameraman is jumping to the next location, somehow.

Part B:

Record labels that often produce performance music videos:
  • GRM Daily - Produce a lot of British Drill
  • JDFILMS3 - Produces a lot of music by Roddy Ricch
  • M1LLIONZ Music - M1LLIONZ's production company
These 3 record labels are all distributers that distribute Rap and Hip-Hop and their main target audience is aged around 15-20 ish.

GRM's stats are quite impressive with 10,311 uploads and counting, 3.64 million subscribers, and 4,202,716,487 Views and counting. these are very impressive, especially with the fact in mind that GRM Daily is actually reasonably new to the game and is now at the top of the British market for Rap and Hip-Hop.
Here is the research information in more depth as well- https://socialblade.com/youtube/user/grimedailymedia

JDFILMS3 is quite a bit less impressive with the fact they only have around 130 uploads, 6.96k subscribers, and only 2,256,968 Views. This is actually not very impressive considering the fact they are big numbers compared to the other labels they are quite small although they also had some quite big names come through their ranks before moving on to other compies an example of this is Roddy Ricch who made a few videos with them.

M1LLIONZ Music's label isn't as bad as JDFILMS3 was but also isn't as good as GRM Daily yet, They actually only have 11 uploads, but they have 45.3k subs, and about 7,750,998 views. This is alright tho, as they only produce for one artist which is M1LLIONZ, as it is actually his own label which means they are actually doing quite well because they don't need other artists to bring up their fan base, unlike JDFILMS3.

Record labels that often produce dance music videos:
  • Atlantic Records - Films a lot of STORMZY's music videos which is most often dance music videos.
  • Press Play Media - Does all Russ Millions Music videos which are mostly dance

Press play is again an impressive label as it has 1777 uploads, 702k subs, and 463,868,953 views. This is quite impressive as it is mostly British rap artists who use Press Play Media which is only just starting to take off unlike some of the rap artists that blew up and caused their subsequent labels to blow up with them.

Atlantic Records is quite a massive company that has been up for a long time and has used massive artists from around the world using lots of different music video genres. Their stats are impressive as well just like the artists they sign and their music videos, with 1241 uploads, 12 Million subs, and 10,648,229,870 views. This shows how having a range of music video genres in your inventory as a label producer is a good idea.

Record labels that often produce Story music videos:
  • Atlantic Records - This is the record label that Joyner Lucas is signed with and Most if not all of his music videos are in the story genre.
Atlantic records mentioned earlier with stats in the box above. Also, the link is- https://socialblade.com/youtube/user/atlanticvideos
